What is the Mata Viva® Program?
O Mata Viva® Program was created by BASF in 1984 to recover the riparian forest of the Paraíba do Sul River (located in the Guaratinguetá Chemical Complex, in São Paulo). In 2008, the project was extended to clients, mainly rural producers and agricultural cooperatives to help with forest restoration and compliance with legislation, contributing to the preservation of biodiversity and combining productivity AND sustainability in business.
A ECO Space Foundation, has since added to the initiative its program of emissions compensation, calculating the carbon footprint of individuals and companies, and planting native tree seedlings. It is an alternative to mitigate the impacts of carbon emissions from events, transport, products and support the conservation of biodiversity aiming to promote the recovery of Atlantic forest.
In 2020, through initiatives linked to the project, we managed, with the help of our partners, to plant 8,500 tree seedlings, contributing to the restoration of a 5-hectare area at Fazenda São Francisco.
The program's support for the preservation of the muriqui monkey
There are many urgent causes in our world, and with this in mind, since 2020, offsetting emissions from the Mata Viva® Program It occurs in a very special location, Floresta do Barreiro Rico, located in the municipality of Anhembi, São Paulo. It was impacted by 3 fires in less than 6 years and is one of the last houses in the southern muriqui, the largest monkey in the Americas, which is critically endangered, according to International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).
