Environmental, social sustainability and governance are on the radar of
Cooperative that has a strong presence in agriculture
An ESG materiality study was carried out by Fundação Espaço ECO to contribute to the management of Cooperativa Agroindustrial Holambra. The objective is to find opportunities for greater efficiency in the environmental, social and governance areas. Fundação Espaço ECO (FEE), a sustainability consultancy established and maintained by BASF since 2005, works with several organizations to contribute to best practices in sustainability.
The methodology used by Fundação Espaço ECO was based on the study of ESG materiality, an important element for building the operating strategy, ensuring alignment between practices and expectations.
The internal and external diagnosis was carried out in 11 stages, including the context study, benchmarking and workshops, which included the presence and contribution of Cooperative leaders. A path taken to guarantee a more productive future, within a low-carbon economy, in addition to strengthening the sustainability of the business.
“Materiality studies, like this one, are a great tool that allows us to propose environmental and social improvements, in addition to identifying risks and opportunities for companies. This contributes to driving sustainable development in the culture and experience of institutions. Being able to impact organizations like this makes us recognize that we are increasingly advancing with our responsibility and objective”, explains Ana Paula Barbosa, Full Sustainability Analyst at Fundação Espaço ECO.
The final delivery of the work included materials that will serve as the basis for an action plan for the Cooperative. With the themes classified, it was possible to provide ESG guidelines and developments, guiding strategic management in each pillar.
These steps took into account the characteristics of the business, cooperatives and the regional reality, with the mapping of local impacts of climate change, health and safety at work, among others. For Shandrus Hohne de Carvalho, CEO of Holambra e Agroindustrial, this work allows the institution to adapt to the pace of changes and demands related to the management of environmental, social and governance (ESG) issues.
“This is at the heart of our activities and that of our members. Therefore, together with Fundação Espaço Eco, we are understanding the most relevant themes that will lead us towards a more productive future and within a low-carbon economy. This means looking at the risks, but, mainly, at the opportunities for efficiency, productivity and income generation”, he states.
BASF is a long-time partner of Cooperativa Agroindustrial Holambra, offering solutions for more sustainable and efficient crop management. “We want to continue contributing to the legacy of cooperative farmers and the Cooperative. The interest in improving governance practices brings positive impacts to the entire chain and community, in addition to demonstrating commitment to the environmental and social sustainability of the business", comments Jorge Luiz Fontana, Sales Territory Manager of the Agricultural Solutions Division at BASF .
