At the end of July 2023, the Eco+ Foundation had the privilege of participating in the 10th edition of the International Conference on Life Cycle Assessment for Latin America (CILCA), held in the city of Viña del Mar, Chile. The event provided a rich exchange of valuable insights and knowledge in the field of Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) and sustainability.
Among the highlights of the event, it is worth mentioning the growth of ACV Social. Renowned experts, such as Dr. Sonia Valdivia, taught courses focused on Social LCA and its applications. An entire day was dedicated to presentations related to projects that used this methodology, highlighting the significant increase in interest in this topic.
Another point addressed was data regionalization. The need to develop projects with specific data on the reality of South American countries was highlighted, considering the particularities of each nation. In the case of Brazil, for example, the significant differences between regions within the country itself represent a challenge. The importance of overcoming the centralization of databases in the European reality or in the European vision of South America was highlighted, emphasizing the need for in-depth discussions in this sense.
The conference also addressed global trends and their influence on LCA methodologies. Growing consumer awareness regarding climate urgency and biodiversity loss has significantly impacted the way LCA methodologies are used and sought after by companies. Furthermore, the increased use of Artificial Intelligence and other emerging technologies points to a possible change in the way LCA studies will be conducted in the coming years. The perspective is that specialists will play a role more focused on reviewing studies carried out in an automated way, transforming their role from executors to reviewers.
In short, CILCA provides a conducive environment for different project executors to find inspiration and information from other experts, highlighting evolving trends in the world of Life Cycle Assessment.
