From Restoration to Celebration of Biodiversity: 40 years ago the initiative called "Mata Viva" was born

About the program

O Mata Viva® Program is an initiative of shared responsibility between the BASF and the Eco+ Foundation for the restoration of ecosystems and, since its inception, it has been built with the participation of different actors, such as companies, individuals and cooperatives. The program shows that production and the environment can coexist in harmony and seeks to support the growth of businesses with responsibility and a positive socio-environmental impact.

Mata Viva began with the restoration of ecosystems in the preservation areas surrounding BASF's production units in Guaratinguetá It is Jacarei in the Paraíba Valley, and Saint Bernard of the Field, Bastistini It is Demarchi, in the State of São Paulo. However, over its 40 years, the program has expanded into different areas, such as: actions to adapt rural properties of BASF's protection and cultivation clients; environmental education for communities near the factories based on the protection of biodiversity in forest reserve areas; and tree planting through offsetting carbon emissions from events and meetings held by BASF itself and several partner companies and institutions or clients of the Foundation.

Through investment in restoration, Mata Viva demonstrates that it is possible to generate value for businesses in line with global challenges, such as Decade of Restoration and the Agenda 2030.

Learn a little more about the importance of Ecological Restoration:

Recovery of Degraded Ecosystems

Ecological restoration helps to reverse the damage caused by exploitation and environmental degradation, enabling the recovery of degraded areas. In other words, it helps to restore areas and enable them to have new uses.

Water Resources Protection

Standing forests play a fundamental role in regulating the hydrological cycle, helping to maintain the quality and availability of water, whether underground (aquifers) or surface (rivers, lakes, etc.).

Soil Quality Improvement

Tree roots contribute to soil stabilization, preventing erosion and promoting soil fertility, and consequently increase the potential for agricultural production, for example.

Carbon Sequestration

Ecological restoration contributes to the capture of atmospheric carbon (CO2), helping to mitigate climate change and its effects such as heat waves and other extreme events.

Biodiversity Conservation

Restoration is carried out using different native trees, which contributes to restoring and preserving natural habitats, promoting species diversity.

Our challenge is 40 thousand seedlings. Come with us!

This year, we celebrate 40 years of the Mata Viva® Program,

Among the celebratory actions, we have the campaign to plant 40 thousand seedlings until December 2024. And we invite everyone to be part of our action by adopting a seedling.

It's easy to participate, just access the Eco+ Foundation Emissions Offset Program using the button below. and choose the option “donate one or more trees to the program”.

Biodiversity in reserves

Image Slide 2

Biodiversity is responsible for ensuring the variety of living beings and ecosystems that sustain life on Earth. The loss of species and habitats threatens the survival of ecosystems and can have serious consequences for humanity, such as reduced air and water quality, reduced food security and increased incidence of diseases.

Suvinil Reserve

At the request of Suvinil, a BASF decorative paint brand, in 2021 Eco+ carried out a biodiversity survey of the forest reserve located in the Paint and Varnish Industrial Complex, in the Demarchi neighborhood of São Bernardo do Campo/SP.
The study was carried out in an area of 30 hectares of Atlantic Forest, equivalent to 30 football fields.

With this survey, we want to show society as a whole the value of this space, which represents practically half of the entire area belonging to our factory in the municipality.
(Ricardo Gazmenga, Director of Decorative Coatings Operations at BASF)

The headquarters of the Eco+ Foundation is also located within the Suvinil Reserve.

Jacarehy Reserve

With approximately 12 hectares of vegetation, the Mata Viva - Jacarehy Reserve runs along the banks of the Paraíba do Sul River. However, in essence, it is a mosaic of landscapes that mix wetlands and forests, which give the reserve a diversity of habitats that shelters a significant biodiversity.

Slide

In total, 103 species of trees were found, belonging to 35 families and 83 botanical genera.

Slide

82 species of birds distributed 10 species of mammals (Capybara, Coypu, Bush dog, Maned wolf, Armadillo, Marmoset, Saruê, Agouti, Hedgehog and Cuíca). Many species of amphibians and reptiles.

Slide

Batistini Reserve

With approximately 20 hectares of vegetation, the Batistini Reserve has sections of well-preserved Atlantic Forest and other sections undergoing forest regeneration.

9 species of mammals and 65 species of different types of birds were found

Slide

140 species of trees. Of this total, there is a diversity of plants, including trees, shrubs, palms, vines and herbaceous plants. Extremely rare species have been discovered.

Highlights

Guaratinguetá

In these 40 years, 350,000 native trees have been planted on the site, many with the support of the company Reverde. A large green area has been established.

There are currently 170 hectares of reforested land, making it the largest urban green area in the municipality.

Saint Anthony of Posse

There are currently 32 hectares at the Agricultural Experimental Station next to its Legal Reserve area, Sítio Alvorada.

Since 2018, an environmental education program has been launched with schools in the region, where professionals in the field are engaged and visits to the Station are encouraged. In 2023, a training session on sustainable cultivation was held, where students had the opportunity to develop their own vegetable garden. During the journey, students were able to connect with nature in a deeper way regarding the importance of environmental preservation.

“We see that we have managed to create expectations for the future in children (…) The visit to Mata Viva and the Agricultural Experimental Station opens up a range of thoughts and perspectives on everything that is possible to do when thinking about profession and sustainability actions.”
(Luis Gustavo Akihiro, Operations Manager in Santo Antônio de Posse).

Rich Barreiro Forest

Since 2020, the Emissions Offset Program has supported the restoration of areas impacted by forest fires in Mata do Barreiro Rico, in the municipality of Anhembi/SP. One of the last habitats of the southern muriqui, the largest monkey in the Americas, critically endangered, according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).

Serra do Mar Project

Based on the mapping of Biodiversity in the Suvinil Reserve, the book “Serra do Mar – The Rio Grande basin and its surroundings” was prepared and published in partnership with Horizonte Educação e Comunicação, through the Culture Incentive Law.

With the free distribution of the book to schools in São Paulo and the ABC Paulista region, the Serra do Mar Project was developed in 2022, which brought together educators for pedagogical training workshops. There are already:

  • 77 teachers impacted in workshops.
  • 200 students impacted.
  • 8 municipalities.
  • 900 books distributed.
  • 283 schools served.

Since 2008, through the partnership with BASF's Agricultural Solutions Area, around 1 million seedlings were planted, benefiting different cooperatives through the Mata Viva Program.

Eco+ Foundation Project Compensation

Knowing that we also generate carbon emissions in our activities, since 2019 we have been offsetting our emissions.
